EDUCATION Minister Ng Eng Hen on Tuesday turned down a suggestion by MP Lee Bee Wah (Ang Mo Kio GRC) to give priority to parents with three children or more when registering their kids for Primary One.
This is because 'primary school admissions should be guided by educational goals, wherever possible', he said.
Dr Ng noted that up to the 1980s, priority admissions into schools were used to support population policies, until they were de-linked in 1992.
He explained why. 'Primary school admissions should be guided by educational goals, wherever possible.'
So for instance, priority is given to children of old boys or girls and members of school advisory committees and parent volunteers 'as it strengthens community and parental support for the schools'.
'The current scheme reflects a careful balance of the various factors that serve the educational interest of the child and the school,' concluded Dr Ng.
