THE FIRST day of a freer Speakers' Corner looks set to be a quiet one with no one having registered to stage a protest and only one person signed up to speak.

According to the National Parks Board (NParks), only one man had registered through their website as of 6pm on Sunday.

He is scheduled to give his speech at 7pm on Monday on a non-political topic. No other details about the person were released.

Though he appears to be the only one for now, there could yet be a flurry of last -minute activity with simpler procedures for registering in place.

Monday is the first day that outdoor demonstrations can be staged at Hong Lim Park. To do so, demonstrators only have to fill in a form at the NParks' website and they can do so just moments before the event.

Previously, those who wished to speak at Speakers' Corner had to pre-apply at the Kreta Ayer Police Post.

In the eight years since Speakers' Corner was set up, there have been 2,144 registrations and 508 occasions of people speaking, not including the latest applicant.

Today's relaxation comes two weeks after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong broke the news of a freer Speakers' Corner during the National Day Rally.
