THE heavy rains over the weekend are likely to continue until Wednesday at least, according to the National Environment Agency's Meteorological Services Division.

Morning showers with thunder are expected today, while those heading out should be prepared for late morning and early afternoon showers with thunder over the next two days.

August, which started out drier than usual, is now likely to surpass the 175.1mm average rainfall usual for the month, due to prevailing south-west monsoon conditions.

In the first two weeks of this month, more than three-quarters of the island experienced below average rainfall. The eastern parts, around Changi and Pulau Tekong, received the highest rainfall, while the northern and southern parts of the island around Kranji and the city areas had the lowest.

In the last two weeks of the month, short duration showers with thunder are expected on seven or eight days.
