From Monday, SMRT commuters who exit a MRT station within the city before 7.30am will be treated to discounts on their breakfasts.

The move is the latest by the public transport operator to entice more commuters to travel earlier during the morning peak hour, when trains are the most crowded.

These early bird commuters can pick up discount flyers that will be distributed at nine MRT stations - Orchard, Somerset, Dhoby Ghaut, City Hall, Raffles Place, Lavender, Bugis, Tanjong Pagar and Outram Park.

Each flyer can be used to redeem a discount on selected beverages or food items at participating merchants like Spinelli and Toast Box.

SMRT said the latest discounts come on top of the current 10 cents savings that commuters already enjoy when they exit at any of the nine MRT stations before 7.30am from Mondays to Saturdays excluding public holidays.

The ten cents is automatically deducted from the commuter's fare when he exits at any of the stations during that time.

With the breakfast discounts, SMRT's director of transport planning Chew Hooi Lian said it hopes to raise awareness of the current ten cents savings and 'reward commuters with delicious breakfast offers when they choose to travel earlier before the peak hour kicks in.'

The breakfast promotions will be available until Oct 31. Commuters will still enjoy the 10 cents savings after that date.
