About the rule
Since March, cabbies have had to abide by the following rules in the Central Business District (CBD):
On roads used by public buses, cabbies can pick up and drop off passengers only at taxi stands.
They are, however, allowed to pick up and drop off passengers along side roads or in driveways.
The rule is in effect from 7am to 10pm from Mondays to Saturdays, excluding public holidays.
If they flout the rule, they can be fined $100 and given three vocational demerit points.
How the rule has helped:
The speeds at which buses travel have gone up by 13 per cent in areas like North Bridge Road because fewer taxis are stopping, said the Land Transport Authority.
Waiting times have gone down at some taxi stands in the CBD. Instead of plying the streets aimlessly, cabbies are heading to taxi stands full of waiting passengers.
