KAJANG - POLICE here failed to get a remand order to detain the man who allegedly punched New Era College senate chairman Dr Yap Sin Tian.
The man, a former student of the college who has a diploma in drama studies, was arrested on Tuesday and brought to the magistrates court here on Wednesday. He was released at 5pm after his statement was recorded.
The court rejected an application for a seven-day remand order against the 22-year-old man, who allegedly punched Dr Yap on Sunday.
The man's parents, accompanied by their lawyer K.K. Wong, arrived at the police headquarters at 4.15pm and left with their son in a black Proton Perdana 45 minutes later.
Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Shakaruddin Che Mood said the man would be charged if police gathered enough evidence against him.
He said police were forced to release the man on police bail but added that he would have to be present at police headquarters when the need arose.
The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.
Dr Yap, who was also present at the police headquarters, declined comment on the incident.
