2 killed in N-S Highway crash
By Maria Almenoar
A FAMILY of six, residents in Sengkang, lost two of its members in a fatal accident on Malaysia's North-South Expressway on Thursday night.

The accident, which took place in Tangkak, near the Johor-Malacca border, left the mother of the family, Madam Chuah Bee Yang, 44, and her son, Ng Gau Heng, 14, dead.

The pair were with the rest of their family in a grey MPV driven by Madam Chuah's husband Ng Teong Boon, 45, when their car crashed into the back of a truck along the 143km mark of the expressway.

The family, originally from Taiping in Perak, had returned to Malaysia to visit relatives for Christmas and attend a wedding.

A team of firemen extricated Madam Chuah and Gau Heng's bodies from the wreck 15 minutes after the 9.15pm accident.

The truck driver was unhurt, but Mr Ng and the couple's other three children were not as lucky.

The youngest child, Ng Xui Lim, six, was sent to Muar hospital with a broken leg but was later moved to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, said a report in the Malaysian newspaper, The Star.

Shin Min Daily News reported that Mr Ng, who sustained head injuries, said he was unsure how the accident happened. All he can remember is that the road was dark and that he did not see the truck in front of his car.

Shin Min also reported that, upon impact, the Ngs' car spun round thrice and came to a stop in the middle of the road, facing the opposite carriageway.

Mr Ng and Madam Chuah are said to be high-level executives in banks here, and three of their four children attend schools near where they live in Sengkang. Gau Heng is believed to have been a student at Pei Hwa Secondary.
