The undersea quake struck at 2.12am around 136 kilometres south-west of the city of General Santos on Mindanao island, the USGS said.
The quake's epicentre was located at a depth of 429km.
A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the area on Thursday, sparking scenes of panic among residents but without causing any major damage, officials said.
