KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA will coordinate with Interpol over reports some of the Mumbai attackers passed themselves off as Malaysian citizens, news reports said on Monday.

National police chief Musa Hassan said officials will also check Indian reports that the militants used Malaysian addresses to rent apartments there, state media said.

'We must check the facts are genuine and the police will go through Interpol. It's too early to say anything. It's only a claim by the Indian newspapers,' he told Bernama news agency.

'Once we obtain the full details on the matter, we will take the neccesary action. Until then we will not interfere in the matter,' he added.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said it was possible that fake Malaysian passports were used, the Star newspaper reported.

'Right now, there is nothing to link Malaysia with the attacks. People should stop speculating and let the Indian authorities complete their investigations,' Mr Syed Hamid said.

He said Malaysia would give its full cooperation if requested.

An Indian news report had said nine of the gunmen claimed to be Malaysian students when they travelled to Mumbai several months ago.

But Mr Syed Hamid denied any local link to the attackers and said the security services were monitoring the situation closely.

At least 172 people were killed and almost 300 were wounded in the 60-hour assault that began on Wednesday evening. India's deputy home minister Shakeel Ahmad said Monday that the Mumbai attackers were all from Pakistan.
