Probe into Thai protest violence

BANGKOK - THAILAND'S government unveiled on Tuesday the 11-member committee which will investigate violence at a political rally that left two people dead and hundreds injured.

It will be chaired by former deputy Supreme Court judge Preecha Panichwong who appointed 10 senior government officials and academics, a government spokesman said.

'This committee is tasked with getting the facts and will need to question those people involved, so every ministry must cooperate by submitting the required documents,' Mr Nutthawut Saikua told reporters.

No time frame has been given for the committee's findings, which will be reported directly to Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

Violence flared on October 7 after supporters of the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) descended on parliament to try to stop lawmakers from meeting, prompting police to fire tear gas on the crowd.

Thailand's English-language newspaper The Nation reported on Tuesday that police would recall the Chinese-made tear gas canisters used that day, after they caused serious injuries.

The public health ministry reported that two people died and 478 people were wounded in last week's violence.

The government has set up two committees to investigate the day's events after coming under pressure from military officials to solve the country's crisis. -- AFP
