As jubilant anti-government protesters packed their bags after a court's dramatic sacking of the government, some stargazers predicted bloody street clashes or a military coup by the weekend.
'Dec 6 to 8 is a very critical period. Anything could happen, from clashes to a coup,' said Mr Kitja Thaveekulkij, whose predictions regularly appear in mainstream newspapers in a country that remains deeply superstitious.
Other psychics said the next choice of prime minister - the third in as many months - in a parliament vote on Monday would determine the next phase of a three-year crisis that has lurched from a coup to elections and now the crippling airport shut-down.
'The country is now under the influence of Rahu, the star of darkness,' said Mr Pinyo Pongcharoen, the president of Thailand's International Astrological Association.
'If we pick a thuggish politician as a new leader, the country will be heading toward change sooner.'
There is little doubt about who he means.
Newspapers on Wednesday named controversial ex-policeman and Health Minister Chalerm Yubamrung as the front-runner among six candidates to succeed Mr Somchai Wongsawat, who was barred from politics for five years in Tuesday's Constitutional Court ruling.
Thailand is preparing to celebrate the 81st birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Friday, a day that will hopefully mean a reduction in hostilities between the pro- and anti-government camps for a short while.
However, Mr Pinyo also alluded to another 'make or break' period in late January and early February as Jupiter, the symbol of supreme authority, confronted Rahu.
'There will be paramount political change as we will lose a revered senior figure,' he said, but declined to elaborate. -- REUTERS
