Asian shares close higher

TOKYO

Japanese stocks closed up 0.42 per cent on Wednesday, mirroring gains on other Asian markets.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index rose 41.36 points to 9,844.31. The broader Topix index of all first-section shares added 0.73 points, or 0.08 per cent, to 881.27.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong shares closed up 1.76 per cent on Wednesday on bargain-hunting following two days of declines.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index gained 374.71 points to 21,614.77. Turnover was HK$60.05 billion (S$10.83 billion).

SHANGHAI

Chinese shares closed up 0.46 per cent on Wednesday, rebounding from early lows as banks and metal producers gained ground, dealers said.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was up 14.31 points to 3,128.54 on turnover of 163.9 billion yuan (S$33.54 billion).

The Shanghai A-share index rose 14.99 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 3,283.12 on turnover of 163.5 billion yuan, while the Shenzhen A-share index gained 8.52 points, or 0.73 per cent, to 1,168.61 on turnover of 116.4 billion yuan.

KUALA LUMPUR

Malaysian shares closed up 0.93 per cent on Wednesday with active buying interest in selected heavyweights, dealers said.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index climbed 11.52 points to 1,253.84.
