Asian shares mostly higher

TOKYO
Japan's financial markets are closed on Tuesday for a public holiday. Trading will resume on Wednesday.

HONG KONG
Hong Kong shares closed 1.76 per cent lower on Tuesday as investor confidence remained low despite a pick-up on Wall Street.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index fell 380.13 points to 21,240.06. Turnover was HK$61.01 billion (S$11.02 billion).

SHANGHAI
Chinese shares closed up 1.22 per cent on Tuesday, amid expectations that banks will continue to ramp up lending to support the economy, dealers said.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was up 37.58 points to 3,114.23 on turnover of 170.3 billion yuan.

The Shanghai A-share index added 39.42 points, or 1.22 per cent, to 3,268.12 on turnover of 169.9 billion yuan, while the Shenzhen A-share index gained 19.72 points, or 1.73 per cent, to 1,160.09 on turnover of 119.0 billion yuan.

KUALA LUMPUR
Malaysian shares were flat on Tuesday, with finance and selected blue-chips giving a slight lift, dealers said.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index edged up 0.56 points, or 0.05 per cent, to close at 1,242.32. Losers outpaced gainers 389 to 261. -- BERNAMA, AFP
