Asian stocks mostly higher

TOKYO

JAPANESE shares closed 0.41 per cent higher on Monday as bourses across Asia gained, dealers said.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index increased 40.01 points to 9,826.27. The broader Topix index of all first section shares added 3.51 points or 0.38 per cent to 922.48.

KUALA LUMPUR

MALAYSIAN shares closed down 1.29 per cent on Monday due to profit-taking in selected blue-chips, dealers said.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index lost 13.53 points to 1,045.97.

Losers outnumbered gainers 602 to 146.

HONG KONG

HONG Kong share prices closed 0.77 per cent higher on Monday, on bargain-hunting after last week's losses, dealers said.

The Hang Seng Index closed up 138.62 points at 18,059.55.

Turnover was H$62.68 billion (S$11.78 billion).

SHANGHAI

CHINESE shares closed up 0.55 per cent on Monday as sentiment was boosted after Beijing asked the national pension fund to take over some state-owned shares in listed firms, dealers said.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers A and B shares, was up 15.81 points to 2,896.30 on turnover of 148.0 billion yuan (S$31.6 billion).

The Shanghai A-share index rose 16.68 points, or 0.55 per cent, to close at 3,040.52 on turnover of 147.7 billion yuan, while the Shenzhen A-share index lost 5.62 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 986.12 on turnover of 72.2 billion yuan. -- AFP, BERNAMA
