British economy shrinks 1.9%

LONDON - BRITAIN'S recession-hit economy shrank 1.9 per cent during the first quarter of 2009 compared with the final three months of last year, unchanged from an initial estimate, official data showed Friday.

British gross domestic product (GDP) shrank 4.1 per cent in the first quarter compared with the first three months of 2008, added the Office for National Statistics, also unchanged from preliminary data it gave last month. -- AFP
