BEIJING - CHINA is in talks with the World Bank about providing more loans to developing countries, a senior official with the international lender said Tuesday.
'The World Bank group is talking to China about (whether) it could contribute some additional financing of the World Bank group that will help developing countries,' said Mr David Dollar, the bank's China country director.
He told a briefing in Beijing that the discussions were at an early stage, and he gave no more details.
Mr Dollar said the talks centred on increasing the amount of money the World Bank borrowed from China, not on strengthening Chinese investment in the institution.
China's US$1.9 trillion (S$2.88 trillion) in foreign exchange reserves have made it a coveted partner in the ongoing global liquidity crunch.
China is an emerging donor power within the World Bank system, and this year for the first time began contributing to its International Development Association, which aids the poorest countries. -- AFP
