BEIJING - GOVERNMENT ministries will receive an extra 100 billion yuan (S$22.66 billion) and a major state utility will invest hundreds of millions of dollars to expand power grids this year as part of China's massive economic stimulus package, state media reported on Thursday.
The additional spending by government ministries will go to farming, water resources, housing and environmental protection, the China Daily newspaper said. It gave no other details.
The government and state companies are only just beginning to release details of how China will carry out a 4 trillion yuan package announced Sunday to boost slowing economic growth.
State Grid Corp of China, which operates most of China's power-distribution network, will invest an extra 2.7 billion yuan to expand power grids in central and western China, with half spent in cities and half in the countryside, the wires agencies said, citing a company spokesman, Mr Zhang Haiyang.
Beijing's plan calls for boosting economic activity and consumer spending with higher outlays on construction of airports, highways and other facilities, tax cuts for exporters and aid to the poor and to farmers.
State Grid said the investments announced on Thursday are part of the stimulus plan. Much of the spending in the plan is expected to come from state companies.
On Wednesday, the government said it would cut export taxes on a wide range of goods and approved spending on two major power projects and a water conservancy project as part of the stimulus.
Beijing also has allocated 3 billion yuan for airport construction in the final quarter of this year, the China Daily reported, citing a spokesman for the national aviation regulator. -- AP
