No more Zhang epics

BEIJING - ZHANG Yimou is through with star-studded films with more style than substance after directing the cast-of-thousands Beijing Olympics ceremonies, his producer says.

Expect no more spectacles such as Curse Of The Golden Flower (2006), starring Chow Yun Fat, Gong Li and Jay Chou, says Zhang Weiping.

Zhang Yimou's long-time producer tells China's Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly: 'I think his biggest change after the Olympics is paying special, special attention to substance.'

He adds: 'You can't mention the 'huge-crowd strategy', it bothers him. He's done with it.'

He also says that if Zhang were to come up with an epic, he would have a hard time topping his previous films Hero (2001) and Curse, as well as the Olympics.

In his first film since the Olympics, the director is shooting a small crime movie, Amazing Tales: Three Guns, an adaptation of the Coen brothers' Blood Simple (1984).
