SHAKESPEAREAN play Much Ado About Nothing will have a Peranakan element when it plays next week.

The beloved comedy about two pairs of lovers is set in 1930s Singapore. The famous interrupted wedding between the characters Hero and Claudio has the bride dressed in a sarong kebaya. As rich Peranakan families of the time were Westernised, jazz music will also be played.

British director Edward Dick, who was flown in from London for the job, says: 'You have to have a setting that makes enough of a link for audiences now.'
