LONDON - TROUBLED British singer Amy Winehouse was charged with assault on Friday over an incident in central London last September, police and her spokesman said.
The 25-year-old Back to Black songstress is to appear in court later this month over the incident at a charity ball, she said.
'Amy Winehouse appears on bail at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday March 17 charged with common assault in connection with an incident at Berkeley Square on September 26, 2008,' said a Scotland Yard spokesman.
A spokesman for Winehouse said: 'Amy voluntarily attended a police station in London yesterday morning. She was questioned by appointment in relation to an accusation made after the Berkeley Ball last year.
'She was charged with common assault and will attend a court hearing in the coming weeks.'
Winehouse has allegedly struggled with a drug habit, while her husband Blake Fielder-Civil has sought divorce on the grounds of her adultery, his lawyer said in January. -- AFP
