'Yes Man' to Jim Carrey film

LOS ANGELES - 'YES Man,' a movie in which rubber-faced comedian Jim Carrey changes his life by agreeing to everything, topped the US and Canadian box office over the weekend, preliminary industry figures showed on Sunday.

The film raked in US$18.1 million (S$26.3 million) in its debut weekend, the ticket sales tracking company Exhibitor Relations reported.

Second was another debut, the drama 'Seven Pounds' starring Will Smith as a man haunted by a secret. The movie, which co-stars Woody Harrelson, pulled in US$16 million.

The animated flick 'The Tale of Despereaux', based on a popular children's book of the same name about a big-eared mouse with great curiosity and ambitions, pulled in US$10.5 million for third place in its opening week.

Last week's number one, science fiction thriller 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', dropped to fourth place. The Fox re-make of a 1951 cult classic stars Keanu Reeves as an alien that comes to earth took in US$10.1 million for a two-week total of US$48 million.

Fifth was the comedy 'Four Christmases', starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn who play a couple struggling to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas.

The Warner Bros. movie raked in US$7.7 million, for a haul of 100 million since it opened four weeks ago, Exhibitor Relations said.

Teen vampire movie 'Twilight' made its way to sixth place, pulling in US$5.2 million and pushing its total earnings to 158 million dollars since opening.

It was followed by Disney's animated 'Volt', which pulled in US$4.2 million over the weekend for a total to date of US$95 million.

'Slumdog Millionaire' from British director Danny Boyle, the tale of an boy who grows up in the Mumbai slums to become a contestant on India's version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' ranked eight with US$3.1 million , followed by the Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman romantic epic 'Australia', with US$2.3 million.

The latest James Bond film, 'Quantum of Solace', came in 10th with US$2.1 million, for a total six-week haul of US$161 million.

Final figures are due out on Monday. -- AFP
