Chinese indie scores
CHINESE indie music is catching on in Singapore.

This year alone, three indie acts from Taiwan have performed to sell-out crowds. Indie band sodagreen played to a 3,500-strong crowd at the Singapore Expo early last month while alternative band Tizzy Bac and folk singer Europa Huang performed to 245-strong crowds at The Esplanade Recital Studio on July 11 and Aug 15 respectively.

And concertgoers can expect more indie performers from the region at in::music, part of the Esplanade's Huayi - Chinese Festival Of Arts in February. in::music was introduced in February this year as an initiative to develop the Chinese indie music scene in Singapore.

The full line-up for the programme, which showcases young Chinese indie acts from Singapore and the region, will be announced in November.

Music industry insiders say that the Chinese indie music phenomenon here is new, with more fans demanding such music in recent years. In fact, the music started grabbing the attention of listeners only in the last three years.
