BEIJING - RELATIVES of a woman who died of an electric shock while being treated for swine flu have been awarded 950,000 yuan (S$202,304), state press said on Saturday.

The compensation came after up to 50 furious family members of the victim attacked and stoned the No. 1 People's Hospital in Hangzhou city on Thursday, a day after 34-year-old Lou Yihong was found dead.

According to Xinhua news agency, the hospital agreed to pay the family compensation following an investigation by a special working group.

A faulty electrical circuit in the bathroom of her hospital ward was responsible for killing Lou while she was taking a shower early Wednesday, the report said.

News of the woman's death had initially sparked concern that she might be China's first fatality from the A(H1N1) virus.

However, Xinhua reported that the woman, who was admitted to hospital on June 23, had shown no symptoms of swine flu at the time of her death, except for an occasional cough. -- AFP
