The explosion happened at 1.12am (Singapore time) in the village of Donggancheng, in central China's Henan province, the Xinhua news agency reported.
Rescue operations were under way, Xinhua said in its brief dispatch, which quoted the provincial work safety administration in the province of Henan, where the village is located.
A police official in the nearby city of Puyang said he was not aware of the accident, when contacted by AFP.
