DHAKA - TWO men were hanged in southern Bangladesh on Sunday after they failed to secure presidential pardons for murdering members of their families, a prison official said.
The two - both in their 40s - were executed in Barisal central jail at one minute past midnight after the country's highest court upheld their sentences and the president turned down mercy appeals, jailer Mukhlesur Rahman said.
'One of them was convicted of killing his wife and two sons after he failed to extract dowry payments from her family. The other was sentenced for killing his first wife,' he added.
The executions brought the number of people hanged in the past week to four.
Bangladesh has been handing down death penalties with increasing frequency since 2002, when fast-track courts were established as part of a crackdown on crime. -- AFP
