TAIPEI - A Taiwanese tech billionaire has made the single largest donation here of NT$15 billion
(S$670 million) as part of his pledge to give most of his assets to charity.
'I am very happy to have the chance to collaborate with the National Taiwan University to do something for Taiwan's medical and bio-tech sectors,' Mr Terry Gou, chairman of the Hon Hai group, said at a signing ceremony on Friday.
Most of the money will be used to build a hospital specialising in treating cancer.
Mr Gou, 58, lost his first wife Serena Lin and a younger brother to cancer in recent years.
The billionaire, who married 34-year-old dance instructor Delia Tseng in July, had wooed Hong Kong actress Carina Lau in a brief dalliance last year.
The tycoon, whose wealth is estimated at NT$173 billion, pledged in July to donate billions of dollars to charity, following the example of software mogul Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett. He built up his empire from scratch and is ranked by the US magazine Forbes as Taiwan's third-richest man, with a net worth of US$6 billion (S$8.7 billion).
Local media estimates he has donated nearly NT$20 billion in recent years, including funds to mainland China for relief work following the Sichuan earthquake in May.
The Hon Hai group's flagship company, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, is the world's largest contract manufacturer in the electronics sector.
