TOKYO - A STRONG 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday off the east coast of Japan, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake hit 139 kilometres (87 miles) east-southeast of Iwaki, Honshu, at 7.29pm (6.29pm Singapore time) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said it had not issued a tsunami warning.

A Fukushima police official said that there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no tsunami, although there might be 'slight sea level changes' due to the earthquake.
